Queen's South Africa Medal, 5 Clasps - CAPE COLONY, ORANGE FREE STATE, JOHANNESBURG, DIAMOND HILL, BELFAST (371 LIEUT: J.R. MATTHEWS. VIC: MTD: RIFLES); and King's South Africa Medal, 2 Clasps - SOUTH AFRICA 1901, SOUTH AFRICA 1902 (LIEUT: J.R. MATTHEWS. VICTORIAN M.R.). Naming is officially impressed on both, however rank has been shaved on QSA and re-engraved with "LIEUT:" & original service number "371" still in place. Unmounted, extremely fine and rare pair. Footnote: The Victorian Mounted Rifles (VMR) was a regiment composed of Australian forces that served in the Second Boer War. It was first raised by Colonel Tom Price in the mid-1880s, composed of voluntary forces. It was composed of several contingents, the most notable being the 5th Victorian Mounted Rifles.
