Instituted 1818. Sash badge consisting of a silver gilt Maltese Asterisk with white enamels, obverse centre in Gold presenting an enameled motif of St.Michael slaying Satan, blue enameled surround with Latin motto Auspicium Melioris Ævi (Token of a Better Age), centre reverse also in Gold and enamels presenting St. George on horseback slaying a dragon, with similar motto surround Auspicium Melioris Ævi (Token of a Better Age), with fixed crown suspension, measuring 71 mm (w) x 105 mm (h), with enamel loss to both obverse and reverse centres, on worn, period sash, with obverse centre slightly impressed, good/fine. Accompanied by the star of the order, consisting of a silver Maltese cross with clusters of rays in each quadrant, obverse presenting a red enameled cross set in Gold, centre featuring a hand painted motif of St.Michael slaying Satan with hand etched Motto surround in Gold over blue enamels, Auspicium Melioris Ævi (Token of a Better Age), reverse with Gold pin, measuring 87.3 mm (w) x 85.00 mm (h), extremely fine. Both housed in case of issue by Garrard, wooden framed and black leather bound, Gilt lettering, with some seperation of frame, good.

 

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
