In silver, consisting of a gilt Saltire Cross together with a ball-tipped enameled white Maltese cross, the latter surrounded by an enameled green palm wreath, obverse with centre superposed by a crowned royal cypher of Milan Obrenović III on a red enameled background, with enameled blue surrounded ribbon inscribed by cyrillic motto FOR FAITH PRINCE AND FATHERLAND, reverse centre with superposed Coat of arms of the Principality of Serbia in silver gilt, with a pleasant enameled red background, surmounted by royal crown in red enamels and hand painted details, measuring 42.42 mm (w) x 72.12 mm (h - inclusive of crown), with ornate elongated loop on an original time period neck ribbon, with enamel flake to crown base and minor overall wear and hairline cracks, fine.
Footnote: The Order of the Cross of Takovo was instituted in the Principality of Serbia in 1865 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Second Serbian Uprising against the Ottoman Empire, which had started in Takovo, Serbia. The Order was suppressed in 1903.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
