The Arbeitsbuch (labour book) is dated to July 29, 1939. Anna Withalm was born on May 27, 1924 in St. Pölten (northeastern Austria). All of her work was done in her hometown. She started working as a cleaner in a private household in 1940, after which she was briefly employed by a restaurant. She then worked in another household, and afterwards cleaning the laundry in a motel in early 1941. In April of 1941, Withalm’s “Pflichtjahr” began, the mandatory work year in the RAD (Reichsarbeitsdienst = National Labour Service). For females, this meant work as a housekeeper or in agriculture. Withalm briefly worked in a school for girls, then for a private household, and from November 1941 to October 1942 at a café. In early 1943, she began work as an auxiliary worker for a trailer company. During the second half of the year, Withalm was an auxiliary lathe operator in an engineering works and foundry, after which she returned to the trailer company in early 1944. She stayed there until the end of March of 1945. There are no entries for the next year. In May of 1946, Withalm began working as a spinner for a company producing artificial silk. She stayed with the company until March of 1947. In late August, she started working for a construction company as an auxiliary worker until late February of 1948. The final entry is a one month work appointment between May and June of 1948 doing laundry for a hotel. Measuring 105x148mm, fine condition with some scuffing, some fraying of the spine, and creasing of the cover.
