Germany, Imperial. An Iron Cross, II Class

(Eisernes Kreuz 1914 2. Klasse). A silver cross pattée of multi-piece construction with a blackened iron core (magnetic) within a ribbed border, the obverse with a raised central W under an Imperial crown, and institution date 1914 in raised numbering on the lower arm, the reverse centre with a branch of three oak leaves below the crowned initials FW, with the original institution date 1813 in raised numbering on the lower arm, marked with an illegible silver hallmark, measuring 42.53 mm (w) x 43.70 mm (h), weighing 17.8 grams, on loop for suspension from period original ribbon, and in very fine condition.
