Germany, Imperial. An 1870 Iron Cross II Class

(1970 Eisernes Kreuz II. Klasse). Reinstituted on 19 July 1870 by Kaiser Wilhelm I. (1870-1871 issue). A Cross Pattée of multi-piece construction, with a blackened magnetic iron core within a ribbed silver border, on loop for suspension from its period correct replacement ribbon, the obverse with a raised central initial “W” with the reinstitution date “1870” in raised numbering on the lower arm, with a royal crown on the top arm, the reverse with three central oak leaves, with the initial institution date of “1813” on the lower arm and a royal crown with initials “FW” on the upper arm, unmarked measuring 41.15 mm (w) x 46.28 mm (h), weighing 16.2 grams, evidence of period repair to suspension, otherwise in better than very fine condition.
