44th Infantry Battalion Cap Badge (in pickled copper, voided, maker marked "R.J. INGLIS LIMITED" on the reverse, measuring 35.8 mm (w) x 43 mm (h), both lugs intact, original pin); and 78th Infantry Battalion "Winnipeg Grenadiers" Cap Badge (in blackened copper, measuring 38 mm (w) x 45.3 mm (h), vertical pinback). Green oxidation evident on the reverse of both badges, near extremely fine.
Footnote: The 44th Infantry Battalion was raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba under the authority of G.O. 86, July 1, 1915. Mobilization headquarters was also in Winnipeg. The Battalion left Canada October 23, 1915 with a strength of 36 officers and 1,076 other ranks under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel E.R. Wayland. The Battalion served in France and Belgium with the 10th Infantry Brigade, 4th Canadian Division. It was re-designated the "44th New Brunswick Battalion" and was disbanded on September 15, 1920. The 78th Infantry Battalion was raised and mobilized in Winnipeg, Manitoba under the authority of G.O. 103A, August 15, 1915. The Battalion sailed May 20, 1916 under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel J. Kirkcaldy with a strength of 37 officers and 1,097 other ranks. The Battalion served in France and Belgium with the 12th Infantry Brigade, 4th Canadian Division. The Battalion was disbanded on September 15, 1920.
