(Orden al Mérito Naval). Instituted 1866 by Queen Isabel II of Spain. Type I. Alfonso XIII issued. White Distinction. A faceted eight-pointed star in polished silver, the obverse featuring a superposed white-enameled gilded-bordered Latin cross in silver gilt, superposing by an enameled blue anchor in bronze gilt, surmounting by a red enamel period Spanish royal crown and a clasp, reverse with central pin assembly and dual stays, measuring 79.69 mm (w) x 80.27 mm (h), with minor toned silver on the tips and tarnished metals, very fine condition.
Footnote: The Order of Naval Merit was established by Queen Isabel II/Isabella II on August 3, 1866. It was founded to recognize the Spanish Navy Force which was taking part of many overseas battles at that time. The Order also recognized the civil and commercial ships who served to the Spanish Navy in combat. The Order was also awarded to members of the Spanish Naval Forces, Civil Guard, civilians, and foreigners for meritorious and gallant actions within the sphere of naval service.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps.
