Instituted 31 December 1850 by Frederick Augustus II. 1876-1918 Issue. In silver consisting of a Latin Cross set with white enameled arms, obverse with a central white enameled medallion bearing a Gold rightward-facing bust of Albert III, surrounded by a blue enameled ring with Gold inscription of “ALBERTUS ANIMOSUS” (“ALBERT THE MERCIFUL”) along with arabesques, reverse with an analogous medallion bearing a central Saxon coat of arms in Gold and enamels, surrounded by a blue enameled ring with Gold arabesques and date of “1850”, the twelve o’clock arm with a loop accommodating a suspension ring connecting a later period ribbon, measuring 34.10 mm (w) x 43.60 mm (h), weighing 15.3 grams (inclusive of ribbon), minor tarnishing and flecking of enamels, with old gold test on bust of Albert III, otherwise in extremely fine condition.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
