Austria, Imperial. A Cross of Merit, Silver Grade

(Verdienstkreuz in Silber). Constructed of silver with enamels, on loop for suspension from its period original tri-fold ribbon, consisting of a Ruppert Cross with red enameled arms, the obverse with a central medallion with raised initials “FJ” circumscribed by stylized motto of “VIRIBUS UNITIS” (“WITH UNITED FORCES”), the reverse with an analogous medallion bearing an institution date of “1849”, the twelve o’clock arm with a crown suspension and loop, unmarked, measuring 35.87 mm (w) x 57.12 mm (h), weighing 13.3 grams, tarnishing and cracking of enamels evident, otherwise in very fine condition.
