(Heer Fotoalbum). This is an exceptionally well preserved photo album belonging to a Heer (Army) soldier. The album has 23 black cardboard pages bearing 109 black-and-white photographs from both prewar and wartime periods. Approximately the first third of the album depicts Wehrmacht forces training and on parade, with a single photograph of the Führer standing in a vehicle. The rest of the album depicts wartime scenes from the Eastern Front, with and includes Wehrmacht armoured units in the field, as well as depictions of devastated cities. Each page is separated by a wax paper sheet with a spider web design, complete with depictions of spiders and flies. The pages are bound by a multi-coloured twisted string looped through four eyelets set into the binding. The cover itself is constructed of intricately-textured dark brown leather, the obverse bearing a silvered bronze Stahlhelm (Steel Helmet) and a silvered embossed inscription of “Meine Dienstzeit” (“My Service Time”). The interior of the cover is marked “WENA” and “Nr. 5594”. The album measures 325 mm (w) x 230 mm (h). One photograph has been dislodged from its original position, and there is evidence that another has been lost. There is also age-appropriate material fatigue to the wax paper dividers. Otherwise in extremely fine condition.
