Germany, Federal Republic. An Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of German, Grand Cross

(Verdienstorden der Bundesrepublik Deutschland). Instituted 7 September 1951. (1951-present issue). Constructed of gilded bronze with multi-coloured enamels, consisting of a Maltese Cross with red enameled arms, with a central gilded medallion bearing a black enameled Federal Republic-style German national eagle on both the obverse and reverse, the twelve o’clock arm with a ribbed fan and integral loop connecting to a suspension ring, in turn connected to its period original sash, constructed of red ribbon and trimmed with black and gold bullion wire tresses, the cross is unmarked, measures 60.73 mm (w) x 70.95 mm (h), and weighs 29.3 grams, in extremely fine condition.
