Constructed of gilded silver, on loop for suspension from its period original ribbon, the obverse with a leftward-facing profile of Ernst I circumscribed by name and title, the reverse with a central inscription of “DEM VERDIENSTE UM KUNST UND WISSENSCHAFT” (“FOR MERIT IN ART AND SCIENCE”), unmarked, measuring 29.73 mm in diameter, maker marked on the obverse “F. HELFRICHT”, weighing 17.4 grams (inclusive of ribbon), in extremely fine condition.
