Germany, Heer. A Dress Bayonet by Ernst Packe & Söhne

(Heer Bajonett). A very well-preserved Heer commemorative bayonet, measuring 350 mm in length when inserted into the scabbard. The bayonet features a 200 mm-long nickel-plated magnetic metal blade with a sharpened tip and semi-sharpened edge. The blade presents plain with the exception of a fuller on each side, as well as a reverse maker’s mark of “E. PACK & SÖHNE, SOLINGEN”, along with the firm’s logo of a blacksmith wielding a hammer. The seam of the blade and crossguard is covered by an intact blackened leather washer, while the crossguard itself is constructed of plated zink and features a hooked quillon. It forms a one-piece handle with a hooked pommel and functional push-button for attachment to a rifle. The grip is facilitated by two pieces of pebbled black bakelite, held together by two visible magnetic metal rivets. The bayonet is accompanied by its period original scabbard, constructed of black painted magnetic metal. The exterior bears a hooked tongue for insertion into a frog, while the throat is held together by a single visible rivet and retains a functional spring catch, securely holding the bayonet in place during storage. Minor running marks are evident to the blade, with oxidation and loss of paint evident to the zink and metal features, respectively. The bayonet is in an overall better than very fine condition.
