Germany, Luftwaffe. An Officer’s Dagger, by Anton Wingen

Item #G44238

$675
(Luftwaffe Offiziersdolch). Measuring 430 mm in length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 260 mm-long nickel-plated magnetic metal blade with a sharpened tip and semi-sharpened edges. The blade presents plain with the exception of a maker’s mark near the reverse ricasso inscribed “A.W. JR., SOLIGNEN” for Anton Wingen, Jr. , circumscribing the company’s swordsman logo. The blade sits securely within the silvered upper crossguard, the obverse of which consists of a finely-detailed Luftwaffe eagle clutching a mobile swastika, while the reverse features a pebbled background. A band of Heer-style raised oak leaves transitions into a ribbed white celluloid handle grip, tightly wrapped with rolled copper wire. Wrapped around the upper handle is a portepee, constructed of multiple rows of twisted and rolled silver aluminum wire completing in a stylized acorn. The dagger completes with a rounded, silvered pommel, bearing mobile swastikas surrounded by oak leaves on both the obverse and reverse. It is accompanied by its period original scabbard, constructed of pebbled magnetic metal. The shaft bears dual integrated oak leaf bands, each with a loop for attachment to a dagger hanger. The throat is held together by dual side rivets and retains a functional spring catch, securely holding the dagger in place during storage. In addition to the replaced crossguard band, age-appropriate tarnishing and loss of finish is evident to the metal features, but the dagger is in an overall better than very fine condition.
