Prussia, Kingdom. A Medal for the Franco-Prussian War 1870-1871

(Preussen. Kriegsdenkmünze 1870-1871 für Kämpfer). Instituted 20 May 1871. A circular gilt bronze medal, the obverse centre bearing a crowned cipher “W” (for King Wilhelm) above the inscription “Dem siegreichen Heere” (the victorious army), circumscribed with “Gott war mit uns Ihm sei die Ehre” (God was with us To Him the Glory), the reverse bears an Iron cross (cross paty) with rays between the arms, inscribed with “1870 1871” within a laurel wreath, the edge is inscribed with “AUS EROBERTEM GESCHUETZ” (FROM CAPTURED CANNON), measuring 28.81 mm (w) x 33.60 mm (h), weighing 25 g, with suspension loop on red, black and white striped ribbon bar, very fine.
