Item #M0385-16
(Gasmaske M38). A complete and extremely well-preserved Model 38 Luftschutz (Air Protection) gas mask, constructed of a field-grey canvas exterior. The mask features dual grey-painted metal eyepieces with orange-tinted transparent plastic lenses. Each lens is stamped with a manufacture date of “9. 1938”. A grey metal ventilation shaft extends from the mouth and features a screw shaft accommodating a removable grey magnetic metal filter. The filter completes with breathing holes retaining a period original filtration apparatus consisting of a cotton base with carbon and other elements. It measures 108 mm in diameter and retains an original distribution label marked “S-FILTEREINSATZ FÜR DEN ZIVILEN LUFTSCHUTZ” (“S-FILTER CARTRIDGE FOR THE CIVILIAN AIR PROTECTION”). It is also stamped with a Wehrmacht quartermaster logo and a manufacture date of “DEZEMBER 39”, and embossed with initials “AB” and “F”, as well as stamped number “443” and “665/169”. The interior of the mask is fully lined with thick beige rubber, with an added layer at the edges to provide a tight seal with the wearer’s face. The mask features six elasticized straps, each adjusted with a functional magnetic metal buckle, securely affixing the mask to the wearer’s face. A further cotton strap emanates from the chin, with the interior side bearing a white label with a handwritten owner’s name of “RITTER”. The mask itself is otherwise unmarked, with the exception of a size stamp of “2” between the exterior eyes. It is accompanied by its period original case, constructed of a ribbed, field-gray painted magnetic metal shaft. The case opens with a lid locked by a functional exterior stud clip, unlatched with a canvas drawstring, and a functional hinge. The sides of the exterior shaft retain three integrated loops with a canvas carrying sling, adjusted with a functional magnetic metal buckle. The case is unmarked and measures 125 mm (w) x 290 mm (h). Minor, age-appropriate material fatigue and loss of finish are evident to the mask and case, respectively, and the eye lenses have become partially detached. The set is in an overall near extremely fine condition.
