Footnote: Rudolf Dänner commanded the Bavarian 1st Infantry Regiment at the outbreak of the First World War. Severely wounded in September 1914 during combat in France, he recuperated in hospital for a month and by March 1915 was promoted to Generalmajor and placed in command of the Bavarian 1st Infantry Brigade. His brigade saw action at both Vimy and Verdun. Selected to command the Bavarian 1st Infantry Brigade, Dänner provided assistance to the 18th Army during the 1918 Spring Offensive, where his exemplary leadership earned him the Pour le Mérite and the Order of the Crown, the certificate for which is offered here. After the war, he briefly commanded the 2nd Bavarian Infantry Division and later took up a staff position in the demobilization of the Royal Bavarian Army. Dänner retired from active duty in 1920 and was promoted to Generalleutnant. He died on 21 August 1936.
