Poland, Republic. A Regimental Bugle, c.1940

Fabricated from brass, the mouthpiece independent of the receiver on the mouthpipe, with a copper wire wrapped around the neck of the mouthpiece and forming a loop that houses a ten link brass chain. There is a 30 mm (w) x 44.5 mm (h) white metal badge soldered in place to the top of the bell tube, the badge illustrating the crowned Polish eagle within a shield, with a ribbon banner below inscribed "POLAND". The large tube has a long copper band soldered in place at the rear, that runs from the top to the bottom. The adjoining smaller tube has a ring affixed to a diamond-shaped copper plate which is soldered in place to the tube where it loops around at the rear, the ring housing a silvered metal ring. Both the larger and small tubes are wrapped in a 7 mm wide cord in red, yellow and black embroidery, the cord forming twenty-two rows, beginning at the front and finishing at the rear lower portion on the tubes. Both ends of the cord are finished with large tassels, the wooden heads wrapped in red, yellow and black embroidery, with very fine bright red threading immediately below, the threading encased in a yellow embroidered cord forming a repeating "V" pattern, tufts of gray wool at the base of each tassel, the tufts surrounded by a fringe composed of multiple cords in red, yellow and black embroidery, the cords ranging in length between 90 mm and 110 mm. The bugle measures 102 mm at the mouth of the bell x 290 mm in length x 160 mm in height, exhibiting one small dent on the bell tube near the mouthpiece end, along with overall surface wear, spotting and contact marks from active use. Very fine.
