Brazil, Independent Empire. An Order of the Rose in Gold, Dame’s Star, c.1870

(Imperial Ordem da Rosa). Established in Brazil by Dom Pedro I on October 17, 1829. Of high quality manufacture, an impressive ball-tipped enameled white six-pointed star in Gold, surrounded by beautifully executed enameled green, white and pink Gold roses and laurels interlaced between arms, obverse centre featuring the cypher of Pedro and Amelia, surrounded by an enameled blue border inscribed AMOR E FIDELIDAD, mirrored design with reverse centre dated 2 1829 3, surmounted by stylised Brazilian crown also in gold, measuring 25.44 mm (w) x 45.56 mm (h - inclusive of crown adorned with cross), weighing 8.8 grams, with period alternation to suspension and small loss of enameling, on replacement lady’s bow with pinback, an exquisite and unique piece in extremely fine condition.

Footnote: The Order of the Rose was established in Brazil by Dom Pedro I on October 17, 1829, to commemorate his second marriage with Princess Amélie of Leuchtenberg on August 2, 1829. The Order was awarded to civilians, and military personnel, either Brazilians or foreigners, who distinguished themselves by their fidelity to the Emperor and by services rendered to the state.
