China, Republic. An Order of the Striped Tiger, II Class Sash Badge, c.1920

(文虎勳章). (Wen-Hu). Instituted December 6, 1912 by President Yuan Shih-Kai. A II Class sash badge in silver with eight arms each composed of five rays representing the colours of the Chinese Republic, obverse centre with silver gilt sun burst displaying two separately affixed stars denoting a II Class award, the obverse medallion presenting a large yellow enamelled tiger at centre against a blue enamelled sky and on green enamelled grass, the reverse is plain bearing four rivets, the badge is surmounted by a large green enamelled laurel suspension with red enamel ribbon, measuring 73.09 mm (w) x 108.44mm (h - inclusive of laurel suspension and horizontally pierced ring), weighing 122.3 grams, enamel wear to tiger, centre medallion and on rays, enamel chipping on red enamel ribbon of suspension, missing two rivets on reverse, relatively thick decoration, dark patina, overall better than fine condition.

Footnote: This Order was instituted by President Yuan Shih-Kai on December 6, 1912. It was conferred upon Chinese and foreign military personnel in recognition of meritorious service during war and peace. It became obsolete in 1928.
