(Haus und Verdienstorden von Herzog Peter Friedrich Ludwig, Offizierkreuz). Instituted on November 27 1838 by Grand Duke Augustus. (Issued 1903-1918). In silver gilt consisting of a white enamelled Cross Pattée, obverse with a central applique featuring a gilt monogram on a blue enameled background, inside a gilt ring, in turn surrounded by a ring of red enamel with gilt order motto of “EIN GOTT, EIN RECHT, EINE WAHRHEIT” (“ONE GOD, ONE RIGHTEOUSNESS, ONE TRUTH”), reverse with a barrel hinge and narrow banjo-style pinback meeting an elongated round wire catch, maker marked on pinback “B. Knauer”, measuring 45.10 mm (w) x 44.83 mm (h), weighing 18.3 grams, minor tarnishing and flecking of enamels evident, otherwise in better than very fine condition.

Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
