Germany, HJ. A Pre-Regulation HJ Dress Bayonet, by Carl Wüsthof

(HJ Bajonett). A very well-preserved pre-regulation issue HJ dress bayonet, measuring 285 mm in length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a unique 145 mm-long magnetic metal blade with a sharpened tip and semi-sharpened edge, transitioning into a one-piece hilt. The obverse of the blade bears an acid-etched inscription of “BLUT UND EHRE!” (“BLOOD AND HONOUR!”), as well as a maker’s mark on the ricasso of “CARL WÜSTHOF, SOLINGEN”. The reverse of the blade bears an additional etched inscription of “GLADIATOR”. A hooked magnetic metal quillon provides a finger guard and flush grip. The handle grip itself is constructed of two of Wüsthof’s signature blackened and pebbled wood strips, secured together by dual magnetic metal rivets. A downward-hooked pommel completes the bayonet. It is accompanied by its period original scabbard, constructed of black-painted magnetic metal. The throat retains a functional spring clip, securely holding the bayonet in place during storage. Dual reverse magnetic metal rivets affix a period original black leather belt hanger, with the remnants of a magnetic metal snap button. While well-preserved, the bayonet demonstrates a number of issues consisting with age and use, including oxidation of the metal elements, loss of paint to the scabbard, and material fatigue of the leather belt hanger which has resulted in the loss of the stud to the snap button. It is in an overall very fine condition.
