In silver with blue and white enamels, with a gilt eagle suspension, marked with an "S" on the reverse of the eagle's tail, number engraved "12800" on the edge of the arm at 9 o'clock, measuring 39.5 mm (w) x 57.7 mm (h) inclusive of its eagle suspension, repair evident in the white enamels on the obverse of the arms at 3 o'clock and 6 o'clock, original ribbon with brooch pinback, better than very fine. In its hardshelled case of issue, marked "SOCIETY OF THE SONS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION" on the lid, maker marked "TIFFANY & CO. / UNION SQUARE, NEW YORK." on the inside lid, white satin lined medal bed, scuffing and wear evident on the interior and exterior, slight fraying in the white satin on the medal bed, case fine.
Footnote: The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR or NSSAR) is a congressionally chartered organization, founded in 1889, and headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky. The first organization ofdescendants of Revolutionary War patriots was established in San Francisco, California, in 1876. A group ofmen who were descendants of Revolutionary War veterans gathered to celebrate the centennial of the Declaration of Independence and the founding of the United States. They also wanted to honor the men and women who pledged their lives, fortunes, and livelihood to the striving for independence from Great Britain. It describes its purpose as "maintaining and extending the institutions of American freedom, an appreciation for true patriotism, a respect for our national symbols, the value of American citizenship, and the unifying force of"e pluribus unum" that was created, from the people of many nations, coming together as one nation and one people." Sons of the American Revolution is a patriotic organization. Its members are male descendants of people who served in the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783), or who contributed to establishing the independence of the United States. The society is dedicated to perpetuating American ideals and traditions, and to protecting the Constitution of the United States; the official recognition of Constitution Day, Flag Day, and Bill of Rights Day were established through its efforts. It has members in the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Mexico, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
