Constructed of bronze, on loop for suspension from its period original ribbon with crossed sword clasp, the obverse with a leftward-facing profile of Grand Duke Wilhelm Ernst, circumscribed by name and title, the reverse with a central inscription of “DEM VERDIENSTE 1914” (“FOR MERIT 1914”), within an oak leaf wreath, unmarked, the medal measuring 36.06 mm in diameter, the clasp measuring 43.15 mm (w) x 18.60 mm (h), weighing 28.9 grams overall, in better than very fine condition.
