Footnote: The Order of Saint Sylvester was instituted by Pope Gregory XVI on October 31, 1841 and reformed, along with all other Papal orders, in 1905. It is awarded to laymen and women who are active in the life of the Church, especially those who advance its cause and welfare in their professional lives. Saint Sylvester was Pope for 21 years, from January 314 until December 31, 335 at a time when Constantine the Great was Emperor and the position of the Church improved significantly.
