(Verdienstkreuz II. Klasse). Issued 1849-1875. First Period. A Latin cross in bronze gilt with rounded edges, with red enameled arms on the obverse and reverse; the obverse with a central white enameled medallion, inscribed “FJ” (Franz Josef) in capital silver gilt lettering, surrounded by a ring, and an ornately decorated white ring of enamels; the reverse with a similar white enameled medallion, dated “1849” in numbers, surrounded by a narrow gold ring, and a broad ring on the outside; on a loop for suspension - marked “Wilhelm Kunz, Wien” as well as with a star on the cross and on the loop; suspended from a correct replacement ribbon; measuring 30.03 mm (w) x 33.37 mm (h); weighing 7.8 grams; in overall extremely fine condition.

 

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
