In bronze, on loop for suspension from its period correct replacement ribbon, consisting of a Medallion Cross with ribbed borders, obverse with a central inscription of “ОЧАКОВЪ ВЗЯТЪ 6 ДЕКАБРЯ 1788” (“CAPTURE OF OCHAKOV 6 DECEMBER 1788”), the reverse with a central inscription of “ЗА СЛУЖБУ И ХРАБРОСТЬ” (“FOR SERVICE AND BRAVERY”), unmarked, measuring 46.13 mm (w) x 50.90 mm (h), weighing 23.6 grams, with replacement ring and ribbon, in better than very fine condition.

Footnote: Instituted 14 April 1789, the Ochakov Cross was created by a decree of Catherine II (“the Great”) as an award for officers who participated in the successful storming of Ochakov (now Ochakiv, Ukraine) following a months-long siege during the Russo-Turkish War of 1787-1792.

 

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
