Germany, Wehrmacht. A Pair of Assault Gun Personnel M40 Trousers, by Max Müller

(Hose für Männer der Sturmgeschütze). A very well-preserved pair of Assault Gun personnel M40 trousers, constructed of a heavy field-grey wool twill. The waistband features an integrated belt system, consisting of a woven cotton-blended belt set within a hidden channel and completing in a blackened magnetic metal buckle on one end. A French fly consisting of six bakelite buttons meeting an equal number of reinforced buttonholes closes the trousers at the front. Two side pockets open with stylized diagonal flaps bearing reinforced buttonholes meeting bakelite buttons, with two additional rear pockets opening with similar flap and button closures. There is an additional reinforced horizontal slit set into the upper right side directly parallel to the pocket. The exterior features are completed with vertical slits set into the outer edge of each ankle, with adjustable closures consisting of cotton-blended drawstrings and bakelite buttons meeting reinforced buttonholes. The interior reveals a partial white cotton-blended liner set around the waistband and through the fly, which also comprises the interior liner of the pockets. A single integrated suspension loop set into the back of the liner allows the trousers to be hung when not in use. The interior is plain with the exception of a black ink maker’s mark of “MAX MÜLLER, NÜRNBERG”, size dimensions of “76, 86, 106, 102”, and a manufacture date of “41”. The trousers measure approximately 415 mm across the waist, with an inseam of 320 mm and an overall length of 1060 mm. While very well-preserved, minor issues consistent with age and use are evident, and include partial detachment of one of the fly buttons, as well as some soiling of the exterior wool and interior liner. The trousers are in an overall near extremely fine condition.
