Instituted on January 13, 1879. In silver gilt, a white enamelled star with ball finials, with seven smooth rays in each quadrant, the obverse medallion an enamelled depiction of a ship with multiple sails, a green palm tree, and teal waters, surrounded by a light blue enamel ring inscribed THE LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE, the reverse medallion presents two figures kneeling at a cross in silver gilt, surrounded by a green and red enamelled laurel wreath, the badge is surmounted by an oval green laurel wreath, attached to a double barrelled suspension with makers mark of A. Chobillon, measures 58.85mm (w) x 87.25mm (h – inclusive of wreath suspension), weighs 57.1grams, worn on period neck ribbon, enamel replacements and chips on obverse enamel ring, cracks and wear to white enamel arms on both sides, nice patina, overall near very fine condition.
