Chile, Republic. An M1895 Mauser Rifle Bayonet
This bayonet features a 252 mm long steel blade, magnetic, with a very sharp edge and a very sharp tip, the fuller running almost the full length of the bayonet on both sides, marked with two symbols on the obverse ricasso, one of which is a star resting upon a shield, the other consisting of three conjoined circles, maker marked "WEYERSBERG KIRSCHBAUM & Co SOLINGEN" on the reverse ricasso. The blade is embedded into the heavy steel crossguard that is designed with a ring at one end for placement upon the barrel of a rifle, the crossguard stamped "C899" on the obverse, with wooden plates embedded onto either side of the handle to form the grip and held in place via two rivets, the steel pommel with knob and slotted to receive the rifle, the bayonet measuring 375 mm in length overall. The bayonet is housed in its black-finished magnetic metal steel scabbard, the throat secured in place by two rivets, the end point finished in a ball finial, incorporating a frog stud on the reverse, the scabbard measuring 270 mm in length. The blade exhibits light scratches overall, common to extraction and return to the scabbard, along with multiple nicks along the sharpened edge from active use, the bayonet with contact marks present on the wooden grip and contact marks on the pommel, the scabbard with a few indentations along with contact marks and wear present, with some surface rust evident on the obverse.
