A large size document (21cm x 33cm), for the award of Iron Trefoil 2nd Class, awarded to German Officer, Oberstleutnant Kdeur. Josef Remold, Geb. Jag. Rgt. 99, "for brave and exemplary conduct and leadership of his mountain brigade during the battles against Partizans (bandits) south of Sahovici, Bosnia,on May 15, and on June 7, 1943, around Durmitor mountain." Dated in Zagreb, 22 September 1943; original signature in ink by Air Force General Miroslav (Friedrich) Navratil on the left; and on the right original signature in ink by the Head of the Independent State of Croatia, A. Pavelić. Document is slightly damaged on the left side, showing age and in fair condition.
Footnote; Josef Remold was born on January 13, 1902 in Eichstätt (Bavaria). In 1919, at the age of 17, he participated in the abatement of the Bayerische Räterepublik (Bavarian Soviet Republic) as part of Freikorps Oberland. He joined the Bavarian police force in the early 1920s and advanced to Polizei Oberleutnant (Police Senior Lieutenant), before being redeployed into the Wehrmacht in 1935. Remold saw action during the Polish campaign, being an adjutant in the Mountain Troop Regiment 100. During the French campaign, he served as a leader of the 3rd Battalion of Mountain Troop Regiment 99. During the Balkan campaign and later on the Eastern Front, Remold served in the 49th Mountain Army Corps. He was later stationed in Norway under Eduard Dietl in the 20th Mountain Army. Remold was awarded the German Cross in Gold on June 6, 1944, for “repeated acts of extraordinary bravery”. At the end of the war, Remold lead the 6th Mountain Division in the rank of Oberst (Colonel). He was extradited to Russia by British troops and became a POW in 1945, returning to Germany in early 1951. In May of the same year, Remold was appointed president of the Bavarian riot police, a position he remained in until his retirement in 1962. Remold died in Munich in 1985.
