Croatia. An Exceptional Wartime Diplomatic Dagger, by Braća Knaus, Zagreb
A Second War Croatian Diplomatic Dagger, with engraved blade, and hangers, by Braća Knaus, Zagreb; dagger measures approximately 40cm (or 16 inches) in total length; silvered hilt fittings exhibit slight surface wear on the circular pommel, with center obverse raised inscription, "NHD" (Independent State of Croatia) within a twisted triplet border; the reverse has period engraved owner's initials (what appears to be "SD") The diplomatic style crossguard features ribbed motif facing an entwined (Croatian style) triplet motif on the quillon block. The black celluloid grip with horizontal grooves has no cracks, showing hardly any use. Blade is approximately 25cm (10 inches) long, marked "Braća Knaus, Zagreb"; double edged blade is straight and with no problems, polished to a bright shine, centering in Latin script "God and the Croats" (Bog i Hrvati); in excellent, near mint condition; scabbard is straight, bronzed, with no dents, and retains virtually 100% of original finish. With matching hangers; these are textbook German Army General's hanger fittings (in gilded zinc, with gilding mostly gone/worn off), while the fabric is of typical Croatian design (so called "pleter"), with black fabric on the reverse, in extremely fine condition. This exceptional dagger is in overall near mint condition. Footnote: while Croatian diplomatic daggers are scarce, this example, being engraved, is the only one known to exist. No other engraved diplomatic dagger has surfaced in the last 30-40 years, although engraved Army daggers are known to exist, and are extremely rare.
