Danzig, Free City. A Danzig Cross, II Class with Case, by Hülse
(Danziger Kreuz II. Klasse mit Etui). Instituted 31 August 1939 by Albert Forster. (1939-1940 issue). Constructed of gilded bronze with multi-coloured enamels, consisting of an elongated Cross Pattée, the obverse with white enameled arms highlighted with gilded borders, overlaid by crowned Danzig-style crosses on the centrepiece and twelve o’clock arm, the reverse with three visible rivets securing the obverse applique in place, topped by an integral loop and suspension ring retaining a period original ribbon with a horizontal pinback, maker marked “HÜLSE, BERLIN”, measuring 36.11 mm (w) x 52.45 mm (h), weighing 19.8 grams, accompanied by its period original presentation case, constructed of a wooden frame with a faux maroon leather exterior liner, the lid bearing a gilded and embossed Danzig coat of arms, the interior with a white rayon lid liner and intact hinge cover, the former maker marked “JUWELIER HULSE, BERLIN - BADEN-BADEN - WIEN”, with a slotted maroon velvet medal bed, closing with a functional metal spring catch with exterior stud release, measuring 58 mm (w) x 105 mm (l) x 22 mm (h), minor flecking and scratching is visible to the enamels of the cross along with slight material fatigue to the case, a scarce and complete set in near extremely fine condition.
