(Silver). Victorian. A large fiddle pattern gravy or basting spoon, with a deep bowl and long handle, the obverse of the handle presents a delicately engraved J, marked on the reverse WRS denoting maker mark (William Rawlings Sobey, 1831-1852), Queen Victoria duty mark (1838-1890), Exeter city mark, and P date mark denoting 1851, the spoon measures 320mm (l) x 60mm (w), weighs 136.5 grams, scratches and small dents in the bowl, a rare spoon from sought after silversmith, in very fine condition.
Footnote: William Rawlings Sobey was a leading silversmith in Exeter between 1831-1852. He is known for the creation of spoons, butterknives and other flatware in the Fiddler and Old English patterns. He died in 1852 at the age of 41.
