Ethiopia, Empire. An Order of Emperor Menelik II, Grand Cross Star, c.1930

Instituted in 1924. Insignia in bronze gilt with red and green enamels, mounted to an eight-pointed bronze gilt star base, measuring 78.2 mm (w) x 78.5 mm (h), vertical pinback flanked by dual prongs, its crown surmounting the insignia having been lost to time, intact enamels, very fine.

Footnote: The Order of Menelik II is an Ethiopian order established in 1924 by then-Regent Tafari Makonnen, during the reign of Empress Zewditu I, to honour the memory of Emperor Menelik II. It was often referred to as the Order of the Lion, for the lion depicted in the center of the red and green cross. The honour was designed by the Parisian firm Arthus-Betrand, and is presented in five grades: Knight Grand Cross, Knight Commander, Commander, Officer and Member.

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society. His knowledge and passion for history and awards is evident in this meticulously compiled collection that is now available in its entirety for the first time exclusively on eMedals.com.
