Instituted in 1874 by Emperor Yohannes IV. In bronze gilt, a Grand Cross Sash Badge presenting a six pointed star with large ball finials and an overlaying Lilies Cross with superimposed Latin Cross, surmounted by a large hollow royal crown, and elongated loop, reverse is plain with makers mark MAPPIN&WEBB LTD on 6 o’clock arm, measures 51.4mm (w) x 88.6mm (h- including cross adorned horizontally pierced ball), weighs 34.5 grams, worn on a Grand Cross Sash of the Order of the Star of Ethiopia, elongated suspension loop is misshapen, in extremely fine condition.
Accompanied by the Star of the Order, in bronze gilt, an eight-point star of seven smooth rays, the center medallion presents a six-pointed star with large ball finials and an overlaying Lilies Cross with superimposed Latin Cross, the reverse with a single pin assembly and dual stays, measures 88mm in diameter, weighs 98.9 grams, light wear, in overall extremely fine condition. Accompanied by a full-length period green sash badge.
Footnote: This Order was established by Emperor Yohannes IV in 1874. It was discontinued as a state award following the collapse of the Empire in 1974, but it is currently awarded as a dynastic order by the Crown Council of Ethiopia. It was conferred upon members of the Imperial Family, foreign heads of state, and others for outstanding service to Ethiopia and the Imperial Family.
