Austria-Hungary, Empire. An Observer and Balloon Crew Badge
(Luftfahrerabzeichen). In gilded bronze with multi-coloured enamels, the obverse consisting of an oval white enameled laurel leaf wreath, joined together by gilded and enamels coats of arms of the Kingdoms of Austria and Hungary, topped by a gilded shield with a white enameled oval disc bearing a gilt letter “K”, overlaid by an Imperial eagle clutching dual lightning bolts, the reverse with two visible rivets securing the obverse eagle in place, with a raised barrel hinge and vertical pinback meeting a rounded catch, unmarked, measuring 57.16 mm (w) x 57.75 mm (h), weighing 21.8 grams, some loss of gilt finish is evident in addition to minor flecking of the enamels, in overall near extremely fine condition.
