A golden Latin cross with rounded edges, with red enameled arms on the obverse and reverse; the obverse with a central white enameled medallion, inscribed “FJ” (Franz Josef) in capital gold lettering, surrounded by a gold ring, and an ornately decorated white ring of enamels; the reverse with a similar white enameled medallion, dated “1849” in gold numbers, surrounded by a narrow gold ring, and a broad gold ring on the outside; suspended from a swivel crown suspension; with a horizontally pierced loop for suspension from a correct replacement ribbon - marked “F. Braun, Wien” with an Austrian goat head hallmark denoting “750/1000” gold purity; measuring 36.39 mm (w) x 55.00 mm (h); weighing 15.1 grams; in overall near mint condition.

Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
