What's a max bid?

Austria, Empire. A Merit Cross "1849", III Class, c.1900

(Verdienstkreuz). Instituted in 1849. Type III (1875-1913). In silver with red and white enamels, Austrian hallmarked with a Diana's head (Dianakopf) (which was used between 1872 and 1922), the head flanked by a "2" on the left and an "A" (Vienna) on the right, and maker marked "V. MAYER & SÖHNE IN WIEN" on the ring, measuring 36 mm (w) x 56.3 mm (h) inclusive of its crown and laterally-pierced ball suspension, intact enamels, very light contact, original triangular ribbon missing its hook and eye, near extremely fine. In its hardshelled case of issue, black pebbled exterior, marked "V. K. / m.d.k." in silver-coloured ink on the lid, date stamped in black ink "1903" on the bottom, inside lid in white satin and maker marked "V. MAYER & SÖHNE WIEN", blackish-blue felt medal bed, push release, measuring 59 mm (w) x 106 mm (h) x 20 mm (d), exhibiting light soiling on the exterior, along with wear on the inside lid and medal bed, case very fine.

 

Footnote: The Merit Cross "1849" was instituted on December 2, 1849 and was awarded in four grades: I Class, II Class, III Class and IV Class crosses.
