Austria, Imperial. A Pair of Bravery Medals
(Tapferkeitsmedaille). Instituted 19 July 1789 by Joseph II. (1866-1917 issue). A pair of Bravery Medals, including a First Class award, constructed of silver, on loop for suspension from its period original tri-fold ribbon, the obverse with a rightward-facing profile of Franz Joseph I circumscribed by name and title, the reverse with an inscription of “DER TAPFERKEIT” (“FOR BRAVERY”) within a laurel wreath and above crossed flags, the obverse maker marked “Reiser”, measuring 40.23 mm in diameter, weighing 17.8 grams, in better than very fine condition, and; a second First Class award, on loop for suspension from its period original tri-fold ribbon, the obverse with a rightward-facing profile of Franz Joseph I circumscribed by name and title, the reverse with an inscription of “DER TAPFERKEIT” (“FOR BRAVERY”) within a laurel wreath and above crossed flags, the obverse maker marked “Tautenhayn”, measuring 31.23 mm in diameter, weighing 18.4 grams, in better than very fine condition.
