Austria, Imperial. A Franz Joseph Order with Swords, Commander, by V. Mayer, c.1917
(Kaiserlich-Österreichischer Franz-Joseph-Orden). Instituted 1849. In bronze gilt and enamels, measuring 37.4mm (x 76.15mm including crown suspension), marked on the ring “V. Mayer & Sohne”, “In Wien”, along with typical War-time “star” hallmark; Swords are placed under the crown, in this case with considerably larger space between the crown and the badge. Badge comes with long original ribbon, slight enamel imperfections, in worn condition; only approximately 60 awarded in total during WW1, thus very rare Imperial Austrian Order.
