Austria, Imperial. An Order of Franz Joseph in Gold, Knight Cross, by Vincent Mayer’s Söhne, c.1915
(Franz-Joseph Orden, Ritterkreuz) Instituted 2 December 1849 by Franz Joseph I. (1914-1918 Issue) A Ruperts cross paty constructed of 18k gold and multi-coloured enamels, consisting of a double-headed Habsburg-style imperial eagle with black enamel detailing, the obverse of which is clutching a chain between its beaks with bottom inscription of “VIRIBUS UNITIS” (WITH UNITED FORCES), the cross bears a central white enamel medallion bearing a gilt initials “FJ”, the reverse central medaillion is privately altered and reads “DIE KONAK ESTBS ABT”, the 12 o’clock arm bears a crown with suspension loop, suspension loop is marked “V. MAYERS SONE IN WIEN” with an Austrian "Gemsenkopf" hallmark for 18Kt. gold purity, measuring 31.332 mm (w) x 56 mm (h), weighing 10.9 g, extremely fine.
