(Kaiserlich-Österreichischer Franz-Joseph-Orden, Offizierskreuz). Instituted in 1901 by Kaiser Franz Joseph. Type I. (1914-1916 Issue). A bronze gilt cross with red-enamelled arms, with the imperial double-headed eagle, partially enamelled in black, shown in the angles of the cross, the two heads of the eagle bear in their beaks a loop of chain with the emperor’s motto VIRIBUS UNITIS (WITH UNITED FORCES) applied at the lower edge, the white-enamelled central medallion shows the letters FJ for Franz Joseph, surmounted by the Austrian imperial crown, the reverse centre presents a principle pin assembly, maker marked with the cartouche of Vinc. Mayer’s Söhne of Wien, pin hallmarked with a star to signify bronze gilt manufacture, measuring 40.06 mm (w) x 72.07 mm (h), weighing 30.1 grams, with war decoration of the 1st type rosette of red and white ribbon of the Military Cross of Merit stitched to the reverse with thread, and in extremely fine condition.

Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
