A Fine Austrian Cavalry Regimental Officer's Dress Cartouche with Bandolier 1900-1915
Cover of the pouch in silver, the top of which is marked on the left side with the Diana's head (Dianakopf) hallmark, which was used between 1872 and 1922, indicating 800 silver, with an "A" to the right of her head indicating the city of assay, Vienna, along with being maker marked "JK" on the right side. The edges of the cover are trimmed in brass, the lower corners of the trim on either side incorporating leafing. The front bears a finely-detailed bronze gilt crowned two-headed Austrian eagle coat-of-arms, with two posts on the reverse and held in place via a circular metal disk on the underside of the cover. Both side panels are in silver, each illustrating a cannon backed by crossed flags and crossed downward-pointing swords, surmounted by crossed pistols backed by a ribbon banner and branches of laurel leaves, with two horns and a stack of six cannonballs at the base backed by cords with tassels. The hardshelled pouch is lined in red leather on the underside and on the reverse, as well as on the interior and comes with a restraining strap affixed behind the interior's back panel. An additional strap with eyelet is affixed to the underside of the cover, and when joined to the snap closure that incorporates a clasp with post and flip cover on the bottom of the pouch, guarantees a secure closure. The back of the pouch has two red leather straps stitched in place, designed to be fitted upon the accompanying shoulder belt (bandolier). The shoulder strap is composed of two pieces, the one end stitched in place on the reverse of the pouch, while the other end is fed through a buckle and secured in place on the bottom. The upper of the shoulder strap is fabricated in fine silvered bullion wire, with a strip of black embroidery running the length of the strap in the centre, the entire upper stitched in place with yellow threading on either side. The underside of the belt in thick red leather, with three pairs of brass eyelets, each pair incorporating a brown cord interlaced with red threading. There is a hexagon-shaped buckle, slider and shield-shaped tip on the belt, all three items in silver and bearing an ornate design. The buckle has a hook on its reverse and is designed to be inserted into one of six brass eyelets on the reverse of the strap for length adjustment, with both the buckle and the slider linking the two straps together. The pouch measures 87 mm x 155 mm x 45 mm, the long strap measures approximately 35 mm x 1,000 mm and the short strap measures approximately 35 mm x 430 mm. The pouch with a slight dent on the top of the cover, along with light contact and tarnishing, exhibiting beautiful craftsmanship, the leathers and bullion without interruptions in the fabric. Better than very fine. (C:46)
