Austria, Imperial. An Austro-Hungarian Civil Service Dress Bicorne by Moritz Tiller & Co.
(Zivilstaatsbeamten Zweispitz). This is an extremely well-preserved Austro-Hungarian Civil Service dress bicorne, constructed of a reinforced black felt shell with machine-embroidered adornments. The brim is bordered from front to back by a 37 mm-thick black woven ribbon securely stitched into the felt. Stitched into the right side is a richly-detailed, machine-embroidered, gold bullion wire ribbon loop around a gilded brass button depicting a raised, double-headed Austro-Hungarian national eagle. Each peak of the bicorne bears a machine-embroidered insignia depicting the Austro-Hungarian national eagle on six layers of gold bullion wire. The interior of the bicorne has a 48 mm-thick, tan-coloured sweatband stitched into the felt. The top of the interior has a complete, off-white, satin-type liner, clearly stamped with maker mark “Moritz Tiller & Co., Wien VII/2”, circumscribed by national coats of arms and topped by an Austro-Hungarian national eagle. The bicorne measures 146 mm (w) x 359 mm (l) x 148 mm (h). There is some deterioration of the sweatband and fatigue to the felt near the interior, but the bicorne presents in an otherwise extremely fine condition.
