An extremely fine quality manufacture issue Austrian 1st Republic (1918-1933) Order of Merit Commander Cross First Class; a silver 40-pointed breast star with a white enameled Seipel’s cross in silver gilt rimmed casing; the obverse with fine quality enamels; the reverse with a vertical pin and a functional hinge/catch assembly; the center medallion on the reverse marked Anton Reitterer Juwelier Wien IX Schubertg 24, however partially erased via hand etching, measuring 77.04 mm (w) x 77.16 mm (h); weighing 63.4 grams; near extremely fine.

Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
