Belgium, Kingdom. An Order of Leopold I, Commander in Gold
(Ordre de Léopold, Leopoldsorde). Instituted July 11 1832 by King Leopold I. In 18 K Gold, a large commander cross consisting of a white enamel Maltese cross with ball finials, segments of green enamel laurel and oak leaf wreath in each quadrant, the obverse medallion features a rampant lion on a black enamel field, with a red enamel surround inscribed “L’UNION FAIT LA FORCE”, the reverse medallion presents the cypher of LR for King Leopold, the cross is surmounted by Gold crossed swords, and a silver crown, measures 57.7mm (w) x 98.97mm (h), weighs 46.4 grams including ribbon, enamels intact, light wear, loss of gilt to crown, unmarked remains in extremely fine condition.
