Belgium, Kingdom. An Order of Leopold I, Commander in Gold
Instituted July 11, 1832 by King Leopold I. Civil Division. In 18K Gold, a white enamel Maltese Cross with ball finials, segments of laurel and oak leaf wreath in each quadrant, the obverse medallion presents a rampant lion on a black enamel field, surrounded by a red enamel ring inscribed L’UNION FAIT LA FORCE, the reverse depicts the royal cypher of Leopold I, also on black enamel, surrounded by a red enamel ring, the cross is surmounted by a royal crown and elongated loop, measures 55.7mm (w) x 98.0mm (h – inclusive of integral ring), weighs 45.9 grams, ball finials bent on 9 o’clock arm, enamels intact, a lovely decoration with hand etched detailing, in extremely fine condition.
