Belgium, Kingdom. An Order of the Crown, Grand Cross by Heremans
(Ordre de la Couronne; Kroonorde). Instituted in 1897 by King Leopold II. In silver gilt, a sash badge consisting of an enamelled white five-armed Maltese cross featuring multiple gilt rays in each quadrant, obverse centre exhibiting a superposed royal crown on a blue enamelled background, reverse displaying a superposed cypher of Leopoldo II (LL), surmounted by an enamelled green oval laurel wreath, measures 55.5mm (w) x 75.2mm (h – inclusive of green enamelled wreath suspension), weighs 57.4 grams, worn on a full length burgundy silk sash, enamels intact, minor gilt wear, remains in extremely fine condition. Accompanied by the Star of the Order, in silver gilt, a ten point star of alternating clusters of five smooth and five faceted rays, with a superimposed central medallion presenting a white enamelled Maltese cross with multiple gilt rays in each quadrant, the central medallion features a crown on a blue enamelled background, the reverse features a single vertical pin flanked by dual stays, a makers cartouche of FERNAND HEREMANS BRUXELLES, measures 88.2mm (w) x 87.6mm (h), weighs 97.3 grams, enamel cracks on several arms, two arm tips have been bent, discolouration at edges, remains in very fine condition.
